Open The Door ~ Based on a sermon by Pastor Gail Dudley, August 17, 2014

August 22, 2014

Acts 12:12-14 When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying. Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door. When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!” (Acts 12:12-14 NIV)

We miss what God is doing in our lives because we are being too holy. A clear direction is revealed to us, but we question it because we think that it can’t be that easy. In this text and many times in our lives, it is that easy; Open The Door.

In the text Peter has just been released from prison by an angel of God. He goes to Mary’s house where the church people are gathered and praying. As they are praying for Peter, Peter knocks on the door. Rhoda is the only one to hear the knock and goes to answer the door, but she does not open the door. What are we missing that makes us not recognize our needed effort to Open The Door.

Spirit of Discernment – We have faith enough to ask the right questions and to hear but we have no action behind our faith. During the praying, Rhoda discerned and heard Peter at the door. She went to the door and asked who was there but failed to open the door. Rhoda went to tell everyone what was happening but still didn’t believe enough to receive what God had done. God answered their prayer; all she had to do was Open The Door.

Move Beyond Believing to Receiving – This is always a tough one because for us to receive we may have to give up something that we don’t want to give up in order to receive what God has for us. We pray and God answers but we respond with “I don’t want that, I want this”. Who are we to tell God “NO” when HE gives us a specific guideline for us to receive His Promise. People can Hear what God says, Believe what God says, and will even Understand what God says, but still not Open The Door. Move beyond believing; Put faith in action and Open The Door.

Time For Us to Pray – The power of prayer is exceptional, but are we praying selfish prayers? We need to change our prayers. Our prayers need to be strategic and specific prayers with our whole heart. When God answers our prayers, we are now enable, and we can Open The Door to receive it.
