I Still Have Hope ~ Based on a sermon by Pastor Kevin Dudley, August 31, 2014

Psalms 33:1-22  Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him.  Praise the Lord with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.  Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.  For the word of the Lord is right and true; he is faithful in all he does.  The Lord loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love.  By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.  He gathers the waters of the sea into jars[a]; he puts the deep into storehouses.  Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him.  For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. The Lord foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.  But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.  Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance.  From heaven the Lord looks down and sees all mankind; from his dwelling place he watches all who live on earth— he who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do.  No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength.  A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save.  But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.  We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield.  In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name.  May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you. (Psalms 33: 1-22NIV)

When we look at what is going on around the world we must understand what God has done in Jesus Christ is never disconnected from the brokenness in the world.  We are tempted to fall into the trap of going crazy, giving up, and days we just don’t want to deal with it anymore. God has something to say about it. Yes, we get angry at times. Yes we get discourage or distracted. But no matter what goes on in the world; what goes on in our life, God is still on the throne. People can think what they want, and do what they want, but it will never change the fact that God is on the throne and watching over His people. God is still in control, I still have hope.

We are never without hope.  There may be a lot of negativity and corrupt people that we are confronted with but we must have mature faith and believe in God in the mist of it all.  Have the courage to be God’s instruments and say I see it happening but God sits on the throne, He is still good and God can fix it.  It doesn’t matter how strong your enemy is, God is still in control.  As we are challenged to be encouraged as we live for the Lord, how do we shout our story?

Stay Alive – We shout our story that God is in control by simply Staying Alive. In verse 19, God delivers them from death and keep them alive in famine.  What did we do with the life God meant for us to have? Everything that happened is because God let it happen. Sometimes God creates the atmosphere for us to have to deal with things, or have to work for something that He will not change because He is trying to do something greater in us and for us.  Stay Alive and let that be your testimony that, “I Still Have Hope”.

Stay Thirsty – God’s promise is always backed up by His power. Verse 20 says We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. If we have help then we still have hope. We get caught up in the foolish stuff and forget how good God is. We start to want the things that we are going through and not the One who can take us through.  We cannot be distracted by things that don’t matter.  Stay thirsty for God. Become so desperate for God’s presence that we don’t stop searching and seeking God’s face because nothing else will satisfy us but God.  God planted a desire in us for us to want a relationship with Him.  God wants us more, He wants us to stay thirsty for Him.

Stay Exposed – Make a public declaration in spite of everything that you may be going through, God has it handled. Your story and declaration that God is on the throne has to stay exposed.  Give God the praise.  We have to stop making the things we worry about the object of our worship. God is the only one worthy of our worship.  Romans 5:5 says that Hope does not put us to shame. Every chance we get we must lift up the name of Jesus, and give God the glory.

It is time for us to show God off by Staying Alive, by Staying Thirsty, and by Staying Exposed. When you don’t know how you are going to get through, you ought to know Who will get you through!
